Noah’s happier than I’ve seen him in months. So I’d be an awful brother to get in the way of that. It’s not like I have some relationship with Melinda. It was just a kiss. Am I going to ruin Noah’s happiness because of a kiss?

Across four sun-kissed, drama-drenched summers at his family’s beach house, Chase is falling in love, falling in lust, and trying to keep his life from falling apart. But some girls are addictive....

Not your typical beach read.
"Invinicble Summer is an emotionally draining contemporary that leaves you in pieces."

I know that every review has said this as a preface, and I will say it one more time: do not be deceived by the cover of Invincible Summer, which is an intense, utterly heartbreaking contemporary that broke my heart in a thousand different ways. The cover does nothing to reflect upon the contents of this read. Do I like the cover? I actually can't complain about it. But I wish that the designers had done a better job of showing that this book isn't some sexy, watered down teen book but an emotionally drilling contemporary that will hit home no matter what!

What I really loved about Invincible Summer is that the whole book is told from the point of view of a guy. I found this book was easier to dive into because I was reading it from a guy's point of view. I couldn't necessarily relate to Noah's situation, but the way that Moskowitz told the story through his eyes made it so anyone could find themselves enraptured in Noah's story, his summers, his struggles, and his happiness. Noah's voice was so real, so fluent, and so steady that you can't help but feel for him and his family!

Along with the voice, the writing style of Invincible Summer also contributes to it's ease of reading. The crisp, simple, blunt prose delivers heavy messages without sugar coating everything too much. I like all different kinds of prose, but I think with certain plots there are only a few ways that the story can be told. With Invincible Summer, the sharp prose that perfectly matched the tone of a boy Noah's age was the exact type of way that a story like this should have been told!

The romance of Invincible Summer is quite devastating, but the family aspect of this novel is the bigger issue, and I loved the way the two plots contrasted against one another and evolved over the course of four summers. I felt the slow movement of the friendships, relationships, and family was heartbreaking, yet also heartwarming, at the same time, and that is an amazing, tricky thing to do!

Invincible is an emotionally draining contemporary that will rip you to pieces, but leave you on a note that will help you mend that broken heart!

  2. Oh! Great review. I love what you said about the cover. I always thought it was some sexy summer read (that I totally wanted to get my hands on) but I'm glad there was much more to the story. I'm going to have to work on getting this one very soon.
